In 1975, Sholay was the highest-grossing film of that year, earning Rs 35 crore. The film was screened in different locations over the course of five years. The film ran for 286 weeks at the Minerva Theatre in Mumbai. Initially, when the film was released, the hall was empty. There would be no people. Later, when two songs of the film "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" and "Koi Haseena" became popular, people started gathering to watch the film.

Amjad Khan, popularly known as Gabbar Singh, received Rs 50,000 and Hema Malini Rs 75,000. Jaya Bachchan was paid Rs 35,000 for the film.
